People-powered reef conservation

Using a unique blend of science, AI and people power, Citizens of the Reef are delivering proven, practical and scalable conservation programs on coral reefs around the world.

A New Era of Conservation

At Citizens of the Reef, we close the gap between surveying the state of reef systems and implementing practical conservation where it matters most. Our keystone program, the Great Reef Census engages a global taskforce to help identify and prioritise critical reefs for conservation and protection. At the same time, we work to upskill local reef communities with the tools, methodologies, and best practices needed to actively protect these sites.

The Great Reef Census

The Great Reef Census collects reef images using crowd-sourced vessels for in-water surveys and a global online task force to label coral images using AI, providing critical information to reef managers at record speed.

Using AI, marine science and people-power, The Great Reef Census is a highly scalable model that is now rolling out around the world.

The Reef Cooperative

The Reef Cooperative program, developed with Aboriginal Traditional Owners, reef experts, scientists, and tourism partners, empowers local communities to protect coral reefs. It includes a world-class Reef Intervention Training Program that trains communities in practical, cost-effective restoration projects.

By offering work experience and creating job opportunities, the Reef Cooperative supports the Great Reef Census and provides a scalable model for global reef conservation.

Scaling up conservation

Our practical and accessible programs are primed for global expansion and are driving real world outcomes. We have democratised reef conservation so now anytime, anywhere everyday people can take meaningful action to protect coral reefs.
